NEW DELHI – India’s Covid-19 tally rose to 29,881,965 today, with 58,419 cases recorded in the last 24 hours, the Xinhua news agency reported the Health Ministry as saying.

The ministry said it is the first time that fewer than 60,000 daily cases are logged in 81 days.

Meanwhile, the country’s coronavirus death toll hits 386,713 with another 1,576 fatalities today.

It is the 13th consecutive day with fewer than 100,000 new infections registered across the nation, after peaking at over 400,000 for several days in the April-May period during the pandemic’s second wave in India.

Of the nation’s total, 729,243 cases are still active, its lowest active caseload in almost 80 days.

A total of 28,766,009 people have recovered from the disease, with 87,619 discharged from hospitals today.

Delhi, which is among the cities worst hit by the virus in India since last year, saw 135 fresh cases and seven deaths.

All shops and restaurants in the capital are allowed to open at 50% capacity starting Monday, in view of the decline in cases and deaths.

Education institutions, swimming pools, gymnasiums and other public facilities, however, will remain shut. – Bernama, June 20, 2021
