KUALA LUMPUR – The government will launch Sukuk Lestari, amounting to no less than US$1 billion (RM4.1 billon), to support the country’s goal of becoming a sustainable financial hub, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

“The proceeds from the sukuk will fund programmes and projects that have an element of sustainability, as well as address the socio-economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Muhyiddin said this when announcing the Strategic Programme to Empower the People and Economy worth RM20 billion, and a RM11 billion new fiscal injection.

The government had previously launched Sukuk Prihatin, an initiative under its National Economic Recovery Plan, which received an unexpected response when it recorded a subscription of more than RM666 million.

The amount surpassed the initial target issuance of RM500 million. – Bernama, March 17, 2021
