THE ancient pranayama breathing technique called Sheetkari is also known as the “hissing” breath.
This breathing technique helps to lower high blood pressure and tension. This is similar to another technique called ‘Sheetali’ but instead of the tongue rolled into a tube, Sheetkari involves resting the tongue on the roof or palate of the mouth. As you start to suck in cool air through the teeth, this brings an instantly calming effect on frazzled nerves.
When a yogic lock or ‘bandha’ is added to this as we hold the breath in between the inhalation and exhalation, allow thoughts and judgments to melt away as we become fully focused on the breath and the present moment. The mind starts to come into a calm, quiet space within.
This technique is effective for anyone who is suffering from high blood pressure, stress and anxiety. If you are pregnant, avoid doing this technique with the bandha or lock (holding in of the breath). Just keep the breath moving in and out smoothly without the yogic lock in between. Observe how the mind and body starts to become cooler and calmer as it drifts into a state of internal peace. – The Vibes, April17, 2021
