WHEN Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh took the stage earlier this morning (early evening in Hollywood), she came prepared with a speech. After all, she was the favourite so it was a good idea to be prepared.

"I have to dedicate this to my mum, all the mum in the world, because they are really the superheroes and without them none of us would be here tonight," the 60-year-old actress said.

"She’s 84 and I’m taking this home to her. She's watching right now in Malaysia, KL, with my family and friends. I love you guys, I’m bringing this home to you."

Lasting just over two minutes, Yeoh was able to share an encouraging and hopeful message, while thanking all those who played a role in her success, almost crying at a couple of points, though without dropping the F-bomb like she did at the Screen Actors Guild Awards

"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dream big and dreams do come true," Yeoh said. "And ladies don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime."

She then thanked her acting roots: "And also to my extended family in Hong Kong, where I started my career. Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders and giving me a leg up so that I can be here today."

Later, she spoke backstage to members of the press and answered questions on the film, on representation and being an older actress in Hollywood.

“This is actually a historical moment, so I really have to thank the Academy for acknowledging and embracing diversity and true representation. I think this is something we’ve been working so hard towards for a very long time and tonight we freaking broke the glass ceiling!”

"Don’t let anybody put you in a box, don’t let anybody say you’re past your prime, blah blah blah.

"Believe, dare to dream, because if you don’t dream then it’s impossible, but nothing’s impossible – look at me, I’m here!" – The Vibes, March 13, 2023
