KANTIN at The Granary, a Kuching restaurant that describes itself as “an urban hipster cafe serving Sarawakian food with an avant-garde twist”, has been nominated as Malaysia’s Best Restaurant by the World Culinary Awards 2024.
The Sarawak restaurant joins eight other food and beverage contenders, including Michelin two-star restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, for the much-coveted award.
The other nominees are:
* Dewakan, a Michelin two-star fine dining restaurant and three-time award winner
* lour, a restaurant known for its modern fine Indian cuisine with French influences
* Fuego, a Spanish restaurant and rooftop bar
* Hard Rock Café, famous for its burgers and rock-n-roll ambiance
* Marble 8, a Michelin Select premier steakhouse specialising in dry-aged beef
* Marini’s on 57, an ultra-chic Italian restaurant and whiskey lounge
* Nobu, a restaurant renowned for its Japanese-Peruvian cuisine
* The Ame Souer, celebrated for its 18th-century Renaissance design and siphon coffee
The Kantin is housed in the Granary, a heritage building that was a warehouse in 1885.
“This nomination is a significant achievement for Kantin and a proud moment for Sarawak.
“It not only highlights the culinary prowess of Sarawak but also sets the stage for Kantin’s expansion to Kuala Lumpur,” the restaurant said in a statement after paying a courtesy call on state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Abdul Karim Hamzah.
Karim said the nomination was already a significant achievement, regardless of whether the restaurant won the award.
