THE government has assured that the price of RON95 petrol will not be increased for, though the proposal was tabled in a Cabinet meeting.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that there were calls for the price of RON95 to be increased, but he did not agree with the proposal.

According to him, any subsidy adjustment would only be implemented in stages based on market prices.

“I am thinking about the issue of RON95 petrol subsidy. Some have asked for the price to be increased.

"However, I disagree. If it is to be done, the RON95 price adjustment needs to be done little by little according to time and market prices," he said.

He said this when delivering his winding up speech on the last day of the Johor PKR Congress 2025.

According to Anwar, petrol subsidies should be targeted at those who really need them and not enjoyed by foreigners and the super-rich.

“Foreigners enjoy RM3 to RM4 billion in subsidies. Maybe from now on, to buy RON95 petrol you have to show your MyKad,” he said.

The savings, he said, will be reused to improve facilities in the education, health and public transport sectors.

"There is no country that provides petrol subsidies to the super-rich, including owners of luxury cars such as Rolls-Royce. But in this country, this five percent group is asking for the subsidy to be maintained," he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar also assured that he would review the implementation of gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) subsidies so as not to burden small companies that are affected.

He also touched on the implementation of e-Invoices, which is considered important to ensure that the country does not lose revenue, but will be reviewed if there are weaknesses in its implementation. – May 24, 2025
