SARAWAK Fire and Rescue Department personnel rescued a 19-year-old girl who fell into the Rajang River fronting a hotel in Sibu town in central Sarawak.

The dramatic rescue followed an emergency public alert received by the Sibu Bomba, said the department.

"Our Sibu Central Bomba station received an alert at about 3.30am that a girl who was seen at the riverfront had fallen into the river.

“Rescue teams who rushed to the scene found her inside the river.

"Rescue equipment was deployed by rescuers who went into the river and saved her.

"She was taken back to the riverbank around 3.55 am and found to be conscious and unhurt.

" 19-year-old girl has been safely handed over to the police," the department said.

Police are investigating what the teen girl was doing at the riverbank in such hours and the circumstances leading to her ending up in the river. – May 29, 2025
