THE Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (WTP), now Malaysia’s second-largest water treatment facility, was officially launched today by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The high-impact infrastructure project not only delivers clean water to key regions but also sets a new benchmark in environmental engineering with the introduction of the country’s first green conveyor waste disposal system.
The RM4.2 billion project, led by Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) for Air Selangor, was developed through strategic collaboration between the Federal Government, the Selangor State Government, Air Selangor, and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).
Langat 2 forms a core part of the Pahang–Selangor Raw Water Transfer Scheme, designed to ensure a stable and high-quality water supply to Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.
Fully operational with a treatment capacity of 1,130 million litres per day (MLD), the plant directly benefits approximately 791,000 user accounts across the Klang Valley.
The Langat 2 WTP also marked its place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with seven national achievements:
In 2024, the facility was recognised for the Longest Dual-Function Treated Water Tunnel and the Longest Parallel Twin-Pipe Treated Water Tunnel in Malaysia.
In 2025, it received five additional records for introducing Malaysia’s First Water Treatment Waste Conveyor System, Longest Water Treatment Waste Conveyor System (1.918 km), and Longest Shaftless Screw Conveyor System (46 metres).
Handling up to 400 tonnes of treatment waste daily, the plant's automated conveyor system transports the processed waste nearly two kilometres to the Bukit Enggang balancing pond disposal site.
This innovation significantly reduces road traffic safety risks and lowers carbon emissions.
In his speech, Anwar praised the project's innovation and its alignment with national sustainability goals. PETRA, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Daruk Seri Fadillah Yusof, is now focusing on the planning of Langat 2 Phase 2, which will add another 760 MLD capacity at an estimated cost of RM3.669 billion.
The second phase is expected to be completed by 2030 to meet growing water demand driven by population and industrial epansion.
