A FOUR-year-old boy from Samarahan who was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) after suffering seizures died on Oct 8 from brain inflammation (encephalitis), according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The ministry in a statement said initial investigations had found that the child had developed a high fever on Oct 5 and sought treatment at a private clinic the following day, reported the Borneo Post.

“On the way home from the clinic, he experienced seizures and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

“Due to his critical condition, he was admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) but could not be saved despite medical efforts,” the statement read.

The ministry said preliminary investigations found that the cause of death was brain inflammation (encephalitis), which can be caused by various types of viruses.

“Several laboratory tests were conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

“Among the results obtained was a positive finding for Influenza A, but the actual cause of death is still under further investigation by the Sarawak State Health Department,” it said.

The ministry extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and advised the public to remain vigilant against Influenza infections, especially during the current period of rising cases.

MoH said while Influenza usually resolves without specific treatment, individuals who experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches or fatigue should seek medical attention promptly, particularly children and those at high risk.

“Early treatment is important to prevent serious complications,” it added.

MoH said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action to curb the spread of Influenza. - October 12, 2025
