MORE than 2.2 million vehicles are expected to enter Penang in conjunction with the end-of-term school holidays and Christmas celebrations starting today.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the figure was based on the trend of the previous major festive season, coupled with the organisation of the Penang Festival from December 6 to January 10, 2026.
"The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) expects two million vehicles per week to use major highways nationwide during the peak festive season, including routes to Penang.
"The trend of the 2025 major festive season shows that Penang usually receives around 2.2 million vehicles entering or crossing via the first or second bridges in Penang," he told Bernama today.
Azizee said the situation would cause several routes to experience severe congestion, especially at the main entrance of the Penang Bridge, with traffic flow expected to be very high today and tomorrow following a 50 percent discount on toll rates by the government.
However, Azizee said the police was always on standby, including placing additional personnel in strategic locations identified as hot spot and black spot areas as a precautionary measure. – December 23, 2025
