AN elderly man was arrested on Sunday evening after a video circulated on social media showing him pointing what appeared to be a pistol from his vehicle on the East-West Link Highway, authorities said.

Brickfields District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chan Hook, confirmed that the 34-second video captured the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) opening his window and brandishing an object resembling a firearm at 4:13 pm.

“Following the incident, a 60-year-old man was arrested at 7 pm and admitted to being the individual driving the vehicle and pointing a toy pistol, as seen in the video,” Chan Hook said in a statement on Monday.

The suspect claimed he became agitated after another vehicle cut in front of him without signalling. He said he overtook the vehicle and, in a moment of anger, displayed the firearm-like object through his window.

According to Chan Hook, the driver of the other car, also a man, had lowered his window and gestured angrily before the suspect responded by revealing the object resembling a pistol.

Police records show the arrested man is unemployed and has five prior criminal convictions. Authorities also seized two toy pistols and the suspect’s SUV as part of the investigation.

“Remand application for the suspect will be made tomorrow. The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Firearms Act 1960,” Chan Hook added.

The incident highlights concerns over road rage escalating into potentially dangerous confrontations, even when toy weapons are involved. - January 12, 2026
