THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that the temporary access restrictions on the use of the Grok application on the X platform have been lifted effective today, after the platform confirmed the implementation of additional preventive and security measures.

According to the MCMC, a meeting was held last Wednesday involving the Ministry of Communications, MCMC and representatives of the X platform to obtain clarification and commitment regarding preventive measures and compliance with Malaysian laws regarding the Grok application.

“As a result of the meeting, the X platform confirmed that the necessary security measures have been implemented.

“After taking into account the clarifications and initial confirmations submitted, MCMC has withdrawn the temporary access restrictions imposed on the Grok application, subject to continued monitoring by the authorities,” it said in a statement.

MCMC also stressed that user safety remains a priority and any failure to comply with legal provisions or violations of regulations in Malaysia will be dealt with strictly in accordance with applicable laws.

Previously, MCMC took gradual action, including temporarily restricting access to Grok services in Malaysia since January 11, following the lack of effective preventive action from platform operators in dealing with reported harmful content.

Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, reportedly said that MCMC had issued official notices to X Corp and xAI LLC on January 3 and 8 regarding the Grok AI content that was reported to be harmful and requested that preventive action be taken immediately. – January 23, 2026
