THE Malaysian Islamic youth movement Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) has urged political leaders and institutions to cease using corruption cases as instruments of intimidation or bargaining, warning that public confidence will erode further unless meaningful institutional reforms are implemented.

Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, said the organisation viewed with concern the growing confusion and unease among Malaysians as corruption issues are increasingly framed through rhetoric, perception and propaganda rather than substantive reform.

He cautioned that such an approach risks fostering the impression that anti-corruption campaigns are little more than slogans deployed to consolidate political power, rather than comprehensive efforts to rebuild the nation’s governance framework.

“ABIM urges the government to ensure that the anti-corruption agenda is restored through clear and bold institutional reforms, including guaranteeing the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and expediting the separation of powers between the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor,” he said in a statement today.

Among the measures advocated by ABIM are strengthening protections for whistleblowers, introducing transparent political financing laws and reinforcing government procurement systems to eliminate opportunities for cronyism.

Ahmad Fahmi stressed that the public would not be convinced of the sincerity of anti-graft efforts if enforcement appears inconsistent or selective, targeting only certain individuals or shifting according to the political climate.

“Corruption will not be defeated by slogans, but by consistent justice, firm institutional reform and the willingness to break the culture of cronyism,” he said.

The statement comes amid heightened national debate over corruption and governance standards, with civil society groups increasingly pressing for structural safeguards to ensure accountability, transparency and the rule of law. - February 19, 2026
