PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has suggested that a state election in Negeri Sembilan may not take place in the immediate term, citing ongoing political uncertainty and constitutional considerations.

“It may not happen (the state election). It depends… because it is up to His Highness and, of course, the sitting of the legislative assembly,” he said.

His remarks underscore that any decision on dissolving the state assembly lies with the state’s ruler, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, as well as the proceedings within the legislative assembly.

Anwar was speaking after attending a closed-door meeting with senior management of Huawei, held in conjunction with the launch of the company’s AI Lab and Innovation Centre on Monday.

The Prime Minister was responding to questions on whether a state election would be called to resolve the political impasse in Negeri Sembilan.

He added that further developments regarding the state administration would be announced in due course.

Meanwhile, UMNO President and Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said he would meet Anwar soon to discuss the situation.

The talks are expected to address the decision by 14 Barisan Nasional state assembly members to withdraw support from the current administration.

Earlier on Monday, state Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun insisted he remains in office despite the withdrawal of backing from the BN lawmakers, signalling that the political standoff in the state is far from resolved. - April 28, 2026
