POLICE have opened an investigation into a case involving a man who has allegedly abused a cat at a restaurant in Taman Melor, Teluk Intan, near here.

A 1-minute 32-second video showing the man, believed to be a restaurant worker, placing a cat into a sack, recently went viral on social media.

Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Chua Kok Lian said following the circulation of the video, police conducted an initial investigation to identify the individual involved, the location of the incident, and to obtain complete details of the case.

“Police have also received a report lodged by the restaurant owner regarding the viral video. “Based on the report received, the restaurant worker is believed to be the individual who placed the cat into the sack as shown in the viral video,” he said, as reported by Bernama.

Chua said the case is being investigated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for suspected animal cruelty.

He said police will work with the Veterinary Services Department and other relevant agencies to complete the investigation and take appropriate action under existing laws. “The public is urged to remain mindful of animal welfare and promptly report any incident of animal abuse or neglect to the authorities.

“Police take all forms of animal cruelty seriously and will not compromise with any party involved in such acts,” he said. – June 5, 2026
