THE primary opposition alliance, Perikatan Nasional (PN), will convene an emergency meeting on Monday night to address internal friction surrounding its core membership, structural management, and impending state elections.

According to an official meeting notice dated June 18 and signed by PN Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the high-stakes conference will proceed under Clause 10, governing meeting notifications and agendas, and Clause 12, governing meeting frequencies, of the coalition constitution.

The session is scheduled for 8.30pm in the evening at the PAS headquarters located along Jalan Raja Laut in Kuala Lumpur.

"The agenda is related to Perikatan Nasional membership," Takiyuddin confirmed in an official statement.

The emergency meeting comes amid a dramatic shifting of political alliances within the opposition block, most notably the sudden launch of Parti Wawasan Negara.

The new party, spearheaded by Larut Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, has disrupted the internal hierarchy of the coalition, Takiyuddin explained.

Hamzah was recently unveiled as the Opposition Leader during the high-profile Malaysia RESET Convention held at the Kota Harmoni Expo Site in Tanah Merah, Kelantan.

The swift restoration of Hamzah to the frontline opposition post marks a stunning turn of events for Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who serves as the Perikatan Nasional Chairman.

Samsuri is now widely regarded as having served one of the briefest tenures as Opposition Leader in the political history of the nation before the position pivoted back to Hamzah.

PAS President and Marang Member of Parliament Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang defended the move, stating that PAS and the RESET Movement had agreed to maintain Hamzah as the parliamentary opposition chief through a collective consultation process among PAS leadership and sitting lawmakers.

Compounding the membership debate is a simmering dispute over administrative authority and the unsanctioned use of the Perikatan Nasional branding.

Takiyuddin had previously issued a stern warning that any political activity, administrative transaction, or assembly operating under the coalition name cannot be executed without the explicit authorisation of its Chairman, Samsuri.

The Secretary-General stressed that this strict policy is vital to ensure all party affairs strictly adhere to the internal constitution and fully comply with the Societies Act 1966.

The emergency notice has been formally dispatched to the absolute peak of the coalition leadership hierarchy, including Chairman Samsuri and the four Deputy Chairmen: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, P. Punithan, and Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Beyond the immediate crisis over leadership and party membership, the supreme council is also expected to hold critical strategy talks regarding grassroots machinery readiness and potential candidate selections for the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan State Elections. - June 21, 2026
