PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said he will seek legal advice after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a letter of demand requiring him to apologise publicly over remarks allegedly deemed defamatory.
Tuan Ibrahim said he had yet to receive the notice but would refer the matter to his lawyers once the document was served.
"I have not received anything yet. Once I receive the notice, I will refer it to my lawyers.
"What I mentioned was based on several media reports regarding his statements. Whatever it is, I will refer the matter to my lawyers," he said after attending the Munajat and Mega Lecture Programme in Port Dickson on Thursday.
The Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament said he had made the remarks based on reports published by several media outlets but declined to provide further details on the statements that were allegedly defamatory.
The issue arose after Anwar’s lawyer, Datuk Sankara Narayan Nair, said a letter of demand had been issued to Tuan Ibrahim over statements allegedly made outside Parliament on June 14 and later republished on social media platforms.
Nair said the demand required Tuan Ibrahim to immediately retract the disputed statements and issue an unconditional public apology.
"The letter of demand requires Tuan Ibrahim to immediately withdraw the statements in question and issue an unconditional public apology.
"It also requires him to provide a written undertaking not to repeat the allegations, as well as to pay damages and legal costs," Nair said in a statement on Thursday.
The lawyer added that Tuan Ibrahim had been given 48 hours to respond, failing which legal proceedings would be initiated without further notice.
It is understood that Tuan Ibrahim is alleged to have made those allegedly defamatory remarks on June 14 at a political ceramah at Felda Jenderak Utara in Kuala Krau, Pahang.
In his speech, Tuan Ibrahim alleged that those who criticised government ministers could potentially be subjected to police investigations.
He also raised issues involving “misappropriation, corruption and abuse of power”, remarks which Anwar’s lawyers claimed could be construed as allegations directed at the Prime Minister and his administration.
Anwar has rejected the allegations, insisting that he had never instructed the police to investigate individuals for criticising the government and had never interfered in the affairs of the Negeri Sembilan royal institution.
The remarks are understood to have been posted online through two separate videos on June 15 on the Facebook pages of Tuan Ibrahim and PAS Pahang, and also to be available in a June 15 video on the video-sharing platform YouTube. - July 31, 2026
