KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision to consent to a proclamation of emergency is appropriate and in the people’s best interest, said PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.
He told The Vibes that Covid-19 infections are showing no sign of slowing, and the public healthcare system is stretched to its limit.
While those who disagree with an emergency being imposed may see this development as an attempt by the government to hinder a change of administration, he said, any decision by the king, as the head of state, is seen as being bipartisan in nature.
“It is a wise move by His Majesty, who is sincerely concerned about the pandemic situation today.
“Some may disagree and blame the government. But, the government and Agong understand the situation better.
“Additionally, His Majesty is not a politician. He would have made his decision in the best interest of all Malaysians.”
The senator said the king would have taken into consideration Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement yesterday on the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) in six states, adding that declaring an emergency to tackle the virus crisis is efficient.
Istana Negara earlier released a statement saying Al-Sultan Abdullah has consented to an emergency being implemented to contain the pandemic.
The order will be in effect nationwide until August 1, or earlier if infections are effectively controlled and lowered.
Muhyiddin yesterday said the MCO will be enforced in six states with high Covid-19 tallies, while other states will be subjected to stricter movement curbs.
He said the healthcare system is at a breaking point, and facilities can no longer cope with the high number of new coronavirus patients. – The Vibes, January 12, 2021
