KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia registered 3,337 new cases of Covid-19 today, surpassing the record of 3,309 infections on Tuesday, the Health Ministry said.

Director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country also saw another 15 new deaths, bringing the death toll to 578.

The new cases today bring the cumulative number to 147,855.

Of today’s 3,337 cases, 2,142 involved locals, and 1,188 comprised foreigners. Seven of today’s cases were imported.

The country also recorded 1,710 new recoveries, pushing the total recoveries to 113,288.

Of the 33,989 active cases, 195 were under intensive care, and 86 required ventilators.

Selangor reported the highest amount of cases with 1,036, followed by Johor (460), Sabah (389), Kuala Lumpur (257), and Pulau Pinang (234).

Sarawak saw 180 new cases, followed by Negri Sembilan (169), Pahang (113), Perak (92), Terengganu (89), Kedah (86), Melaka (85), Kelantan (85), Labuan (34), Putrajaya (24), and Perlis (four).

Noor Hisham said 153 of today’s cases were related to the clusters involving lockups, immigration detention centres, and prisons involving the clusters Tembok Mempaga (63), Tropika (51), Jalan Harapan Prison (34), Kepayan Prison (two), Tembok Choh (one), Tembok Gajah (one), and Pagar Siput (one).

More than half of today’s deaths were reported in Sabah, involving six men and two women aged between 27 and 91. Selangor’s three deaths included a man and two women aged between 34 and 61.

Putrajaya recorded the death of an 81-year-old man; Negri Sembilan saw the death of a 60-year-old man, and Johor registered two deaths, both men aged 53 and 61.

Noor Hisham said the country had seen 623 clusters overall including seven new clusters today. The clusters that have ended stand at 347, including one today, the Huma cluster in Kelantan. Clusters currently active are at 276.

The seven new clusters comprise the Jalan Selayang cluster in Gombak, Selangor with 84 cases, followed by the Tropika Cluster in Johor Baru with 55 cases, the Pasir Barat cluster in Johor Baru and Kota Tinggi, Johor with 92 cases, and the Dutamas construction site cluster with 18 cases.

Also among the new clusters are the Jalan Pahang cluster covering Kepong, Titiwangsa, Lembah Pantai, and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur with six cases; the Jalan Rantau-Siliau cluster in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan with 96 cases, and the Intan Mas cluster in Hilir Perak, Perak, with 15 cases. – The Vibes, January 14, 2021
