MIRI – Some big companies are forcing their employees to return to offices, despite the spread of Covid-19 and imposition of the movement control order (MCO) in the Sibu division.

In an update on social media, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said he has received complaints from workers of such companies in town with regard to the matter.

“I have received alerts from employees of certain big companies that their bosses are forcing them to go to the office and continue working as usual.

“Some of these employees have no choice but to comply, despite being afraid of contracting Covid-19.

“I appeal to these companies’ management to be considerate. For the sake of your employees and their families, allow them to stay home,” he said, adding that the general level of compliance by shops to close temporarily during the lockdown has improved, with most being closed today.

Ting said he is doing regular ground checks to ensure that everyone complies with MCO directives, including closures of non-essential businesses and services.

The Sibu division is made up of the three districts, namely Sibu, Kanowit and Selangau.

The division has been placed under the MCO until January 29, after seeing nearly 600 positive Covid-19 cases last week.

The rest of Sarawak, meanwhile, is under the conditional MCO, following a statewide surge in daily infections. – The Vibes, January 19, 2021
