KUALA LUMPUR – Six categories of students in higher-learning institutes will be allowed back to their respective campuses starting March 1 to resume physical and online classes, said the Higher Education Ministry.
In a statement today, the ministry said the students involved are those in certification programmes, as well as diploma, degree and postgraduate studies that require hands-on learning, laboratory use, training, studios, workshops and special equipment.
Students who lack a conducive environment for online classes, or have no access to such classes, are also allowed on campus.
Existing and new international students are allowed back, except those from the United Kingdom.
Other categories are for disabled students, those sitting the Malaysian University English Test and professional students.
This announcement comes despite recent daily Covid-19 cases breaching the 5,000-mark.
“Students who are already on campus can continue their physical and online classes. Those who are not in the mentioned categories will continue their studies online,” the ministry said.
It added that hybrid learning on campus can be carried out by fully adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs), while prioritising the safety and welfare of students.
Underprivileged students from Peninsular Malaysia heading to Sabah and Sarawak will need to undergo swab tests, which will be paid for by the Health Ministry.
“For students arriving in Sarawak, they must undergo a 14-day quarantine before being allowed to return to campus. The state government will bear the cost of food and quarantine starting March 1.
“Students from Sabah and Sarawak will be placed in isolation centres determined by their respective universities to ensure that they do not carry the virus.
“Students are advised to refer to SOPs determined by both states, while tertiary institutions can refer to existing SOPs for the higher education sector.”
