MIRI – Eight residents in a four-storey flat in Jalan Matang, Kuching survived a fire early this morning, with three being rescued by firefighters.

The blaze was reported shortly after 5am at Flat Block 7 in Taman Suria Jaya, Jalan Matang.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said an emergency call was made at 5.12am from a resident and two teams of firefighters were sent to the flat.

“Five people had jumped from their unit to escape the fire. They suffered various degrees of injuries and were later sent to hospital for treatment.

“The fire teams rescued a family of three – a man, his wife and their baby – who were still trapped in their unit. They were brought out safely,” the department said in a media release.

“The fire burned down several units in the flat and by 5.45am, the blaze was put out completely.”

Investigations are ongoing to identify the cause of the fire. – The Vibes, February 10, 2021
