KUALA LUMPUR — With triple-digit daily Covid-19 infections found in Malaysia since last week, recording among its highest on October 1 at 260 cases, netizens are pointing towards the likelihood of a nationwide lockdown, similar to the Movement Control Order (MCO) in March 2020.
Infections in the country began to surge sharply with the increasing number of travels to and from Sabah due to the recently concluded state election on September 26. The total number of cases now stands at 11,484 with a cumulatively total of 136 deaths.
A cryptic tweet posted by the health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham set everyone's tongue wagging on whether the government will be imposing the lockdown across the country again.
Noor Hisham later explained that his tweet was merely a reminder to the people.
According to sources close to the government, it is unlikely that the government will be imposing blanket nationwide lockdown measures similar to the initial phase in March.
Speaking on anonymity, sources told The Vibes that it will be unlikely to happen for now.
“Imposing a nationwide MCO... not at this moment and I don't think it will be enforced again, and if there is, it will be targeted like TEMCO (Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order) such as in Kota Setar.
“It's more effective in that way. We cannot afford another MCO. Back then, it had never been done before and MCO was the best choice at that time for everyone to stay at home. — The Vibes, October 2, 2020
