MIRI – The death of a 33-year-old man due to Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of those with comorbidities registering for the vaccination programme, said a Sarawak minister.

State Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also a heart specialist, today said Phase 2 of the immunisation drive that begins next month will include high-risk groups.

“The victim had high blood pressure, and despite his young age, he succumbed to the virus. So, those with high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol must register for Covid-19 vaccination urgently.

“Those suffering from any of these comorbidities will be placed under Phase 2 of the Covid-19 immunisation programme in Sarawak that will start on April 19.”

Yesterday, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat confirmed the death of the 33-year-old at Miri Hospital.

“He was brought to the hospital because he was suffering acute respiratory problems on March 28. He also had high blood pressure.

“After he was brought to Miri Hospital, his condition worsened, and he died the same day. His test today confirmed that he died of Covid-19.”

While the state’s report indicated the victim’s age as 33, the report by the federal Health Ministry said he was 34.
