KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia continues to record a worrying number of daily Covid-19 infections, with 2,717 fresh cases detected today.

This is the 10th straight day reported cases are above the 2,000-mark, with the total number of infections since the start of the outbreak last year now standing at 390,252.

The last time figures were below the 2,000-mark was on April 14, when 1,889 individuals were down with the virus.

Eleven fatalities were also recorded nationwide, bringing the total mortality number since the pandemic erupted to 1,426.

According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Selangor recorded the highest number of infections today with 768 cases.

Cumulatively, the state also leads with the most number of cases, at 127,260.

Sarawak has the second-highest number of infections today with 570, followed by Kelantan (518), Kuala Lumpur (240), Penang (134), Sabah (132) and Johor (126).

Of the overall cases today, 26 are imported, Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

The director-general said 2,292 individuals have also recovered from the virus today, bringing the cumulative recoveries to 365,900 since the virus hit Malaysia.

These latest figures mean there are now 22,926 active cases.

“272 individuals are currently warded in intensive care units, of whom 124 require breathing support,” he added.

Separately, Dr Noor Hisham said the ministry has identified 10 new clusters today, of which seven originated from workplaces.

The seven are Jalan Melor and Jalan Abdul Karim (Selangor), Jalan Ipoh-Lumut and Jalan Datoh (Perak), Tingkat Mat Mandin (Penang), D’Lahar (Terengganu) and Desa Mawar (Pahang).

Two more are community clusters — Jalan Kolam Dua (Perak) and Dambai Inanam (Sabah) — while the other is an education cluster, Jalan St Thomas (Kuala Lumpur).
