KUALA LUMPUR – The police have called in Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil for questioning in relation to his presence outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters during cartoonist Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin’s release from remand on Saturday.

This makes the PKR communications director the latest among a number of government critics to be hauled up in what is seen as institutional intimidation by the police.

Fahmi confirmed that he had been contacted by an officer from Dang Wangi to have his statement recorded following his attendance there the day Fahmi Reza was released.

He said the officer from the station had contacted his office to summon him to show up there tomorrow, but he asked for the questioning to be rescheduled to a date next week due to prior commitments for Ramadan.

However, Fahmi said he was still in the midst of confirming the rescheduled date at press time.

“I don’t know why they (police) are calling me in as they did not specify the reason,” Fahmi told The Vibes.

However, in an earlier message, Fahmi said he will give his fullest cooperation to the police.

He added that other than attending the gathering, he also did not know if he is deemed to have committed any offence under the law.

He said although he had been roped in for questioning by the police previously, this was the first time he had been called in for questioning for attending a solidarity gathering.

“I did not give any speech (at the time) but I did speak with some of the media who were present,” he recounted.

It is understood that he had attended the solidarity gathering in a show of support for Fahmi Reza, who was detained for a day after the latter had created the “This Is Dengki Ke” Spotify playlist that offended some quarters.

Fahmi’s revelation also comes a day after PKR president and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was summoned to Bukit Aman over a probe into a leaked audio recording purportedly featuring him and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. – The Vibes, April 29, 2021
