SANDAKAN – A Malaysian brand of men’s boxers sold in several supermarkets here have gone viral on Facebook today after they were spotted having a Quran verse printed on them.
Several Facebook pages, including the group Sandakankini, had posted photos of the boxers with Chinese characters, English wording and a Quranic verse in Arabic – said to be taken from Surah Al-Hijr, verses 97-98.
Following the post, a team from the Sabah Islamic Affairs Department office here inspected said supermarket in Mile 8.
Religious administration officer Romzi Rahman, who led the team, confirmed the social media posts and that the supermarket was selling said boxers.
“We found that four supermarkets are selling this item. We have ordered the supermarket managers to stop selling this item and put them away. They have informed the supplier to collect its stock.
“I see this as something that could threaten the unity of Malaysians. For a verse from the Quran to be printed on a boxer is disrespectful to Muslims.”
Romzi asked members of the public to be careful when purchasing clothing with religious wording, and to report any encounter of such items to the department. – The Vibes, April 30, 2021
