MIRI – The latest statistics compiled by the state Health Department shows that Sarawak is seeing an average of three new Covid-19 deaths daily and a daily average of 596 new infections.

Acting Sarawak Health Department director Dr Rosemawati Arifin said the situation has been getting worse since Hari Raya Aidilfitri more than a week ago.

“We have seen a daily average increase of three new deaths every day now and an average daily increase of 596 new infections.

“In May alone (May 2 to 25), there were 74 deaths in Sarawak due to Covid-19. In the intensive care unit in our hospitals in Sarawak, there are 83 Covid-19 patients in critical condition, with 32 of them needing ventilators to breathe.

“The situation has gotten worse since Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” she said in a statement today.

She said data shows many Covid-19 carriers had infected others during the Raya period.

“Many got infected from positive carriers who went visiting during Raya, including visits among families. This was especially prevalent in the Kuching and Kabong districts.”

Dr Rosemawati expressed worries over the possibility of surges in infections during the coming Gawai Dayak festival that will start on June 1, appealing to the public not to carry out any Gawai balik kampung exodus this year.

“Think of yourselves and your loved ones by not going for any balik kampung this year. Do not carry out any Gawai visits. Do not travel across districts and zones.

“Focus on adhering to all SOPs and give priority to going for Covid-19 vaccination.”

Gawai Dayak is traditionally a month-long celebration to give thanks for a good harvest. There are one million Dayaks throughout Sarawak. – The Vibes, May 25, 2021
