KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 7,703 new coronavirus cases today, bringing the nation’s caseload to 587,165. Just two of these are imported cases, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

The number of new deaths from Covid-19 in Malaysia rose to a daily record of 126, and is also the first time fatalities have breached three figures, bringing the death toll from the pandemic in the country to 2,993.

In a statement, the health director-general said that of the deaths today 29 were in Selangor, 18 in Kuala Lumpur, 14 in Negeri Sembilan, 12 in Kelantan 11 in Johor, and 10 in Kedah.

Labuan recorded 8 deaths, followed by 5 each in Melaka and Terengganu, Sarawak (4), Pahang (4), while Sabah, Putrajaya and Perak saw 2 in each state.

He said Penang recorded only 1 fatality.

There are currently 878 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units nationwide, with 441 in critical condition.

Selangor, again, logged the highest number of fresh infections with 2,728, followed by Kuala Lumpur (701), Sarawak (588), Negeri Sembilan (586), Johor (554), Kelantan (541) and Penang (407).

States with fewer than 300 cases are Kedah (283), Sabah (254), Pahang (237), Perak (224), Terengganu (224), Melaka (209), Labuan (159), Perlis (7) and Putrajaya (1).

There were 5,777 discharged Covid-19 patients today, bringing cumulative total of recoveries to 501,898. That puts active cases now up to 82,274.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that the country has seen a total of 2,237 clusters, including 22 new ones today.

A total of 1,563 clusters have ended, while 674 clusters remain active.

Dr Noor Hisham said that 11 of today’s new clusters are related to workplaces, 7 are from the community, 2 are from higher learning institutions, while one came from a detention centre and another one from religious activities.

Selangor recorded the Jalan Waja Lima Belas workplace cluster in Kuala Langat and Petaling with 23 cases, and the Jalan Beringin education cluster in Hulu Selangor and Petaling with 13 cases. 

Kuala Lumpur saw the Jalan Balam workplace cluster in Kepong and Titiwangsa with 11 cases, and the Jalan Yaacob Latif 2 education cluster in Cheras with 10 cases.

Sarawak saw the Jalan Jee Cattleya workplace cluster in Miri with 23 cases, the Jalan Pinang Riam workplace cluster in Miri with 15 cases, the Nanga Meruan community cluster in Selangau, Sibu and Kanowit with 34 cases, and the Sungai Penyarai community cluster in Tatau with 27 cases.

Johor logged the Jalan SILC Satu workplace cluster in Johor Bahru and Pontian with 15 cases, Teknologi Enam workplace cluster in Tangkak with 15 cases, the Jalan Bioteknologi Satu workplace cluster in Johor Baru with 24 cases, and the Jalan Parit Raja Tengah community cluster in Muar with 27 cases.

Kelantan registered the Pantai Kemayang workplace cluster in Bachok with 22 cases, while Negri Sembilan logged the Industri Jemapoh workplace cluster in Kuala Pilah and Jempol with 50 cases, and the Jalan Mutiara Galla religious activity cluster in Seremban with 33 cases.

Perak recorded the Jalan Tambun workplace cluster in Kinta and Hulu Perak with 20 cases, the Kg Alai community cluster in Hulu Perak with 18 cases, as well as the Taman Fasa 2A cluster in Manjung which extended to Cheras in Kuala Lumpur with 33 cases.

Penang recorded the Industri Bukit Panchor workplace cluster in Seberang Prai with 94 cases, and the Kelisa Emas community cluster in Seberang Prai with 20 cases, while Kedah saw the Dah Kg Lancuk in Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, and Sik with 57 cases.

Finally, Pahang logged the Kemayan detention centre cluster in Bera with 40 cases. – The Vibes, June 2, 2021
