KUALA LUMPUR – New Covid-19 cases dropped to 6,241 today, from 7,452 yesterday, with only four imported cases, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
In a statement, he said the nation recorded 87 fresh fatalities, bringing the death toll to 3,378.
A total of 5,133 patients were discharged, while 890 are in intensive care units, with 444 in need of ventilator support.
Selangor continues to log the most infections with 2,178, followed by Sarawak (600), Johor (565), Kuala Lumpur (415), and Sabah (305).
Penang registered 217 new cases, followed by Kelantan (270), Negeri Sembilan (556), Perak (174), Kedah (125), Melaka (225), Pahang (155), Terengganu (158), Labuan (212), Putrajaya (30) and Perlis (2).
Of the 87 deaths today, 34 were recorded in Selangor, 12 in Johor, Negeri Sembilan (9), Kedah (6), Kuala Lumpur (5), four each in Penang and Sarawak, three each in Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu, and two each in Melaka and Labuan.
Dr Noor Hisham said the country has recorded a total of 2,338 clusters, including 30 new clusters today.
Clusters that have ended are at 1,625, while 713 remained active.
Dr Noor Hisham said of the 30 new clusters, 18 are related to workplaces, with 10 coming from factories.
He added that 7 clusters came from the community, three from education institutions, and one each from the high-risk group, religious activities, and detention centres.
The health director-general also warned of a rising trend in sporadic cases, which are cases that could not be traced to any clusters or other infections, especially after April 1 this year, which falls on the 13th epidemiology week (ME-13) period.
Based on analysis, Dr Noor Hisham said by ME-13, or until April 3, the ministry recorded 8,968 cases, of which 52% were sporadic.
He said by ME-19, new cases were at 29,386, of which 77.7% are sporadic. He said the country later recorded the highest cumulative cases in ME-21, with some 53,419, of which 85.1% are sporadic.
Dr Noor Hisham said the sporadic cases remained high on ME-22, or until June 5, with new cases reported at 52,040, of which 84.3% are sporadic.
“One of the factors contributing to the situation is the emergence of new variants in the community with a high-infectivity and death rate, apart from the wider spread of Covid-19 compared to previous MEs,” he said.
