KUALA LUMPUR – Research and advocacy organisation Sekhar Institute and news portal The Vibes will hold a webinar on the emergency, which will, among others, discuss the issues involved in lifting the order and restoring democracy and the rule of law in Malaysia.

Titled “Emergency, Democracy and the Rule of Law”, the webinar is the fourth in the Because It Matters series.

It will be held from 10am to 12.30pm this Saturday, featuring a former attorney-general, a former Parliament speaker, two politicians from PKR and DAP, and a showbiz personality.

Former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, who served under the previous Pakatan Harapan administration, will be a panellist, alongside former Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, who is also Usno Baru president.

The other panellists are PKR vice-president and information chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, DAP Youth chief and Perak exco Howard Lee, and actor, producer and social activist Datuk Afdlin Shauki Aksan.

The discussion will be moderated by P. Gunasegaram, chief executive of Sekhar Institute, a unit within the PETRA Group. PETRA chairman and CEO Datuk (Dr) Vinod Sekhar will give the opening address.

Sekhar Institute’s aims include promoting awareness, discussion and debate on important issues and suggesting solutions where possible.

The webinar will start with a discussion on the emergency and its impact on the democratic process, especially relating to the federal constitution, and interpretations and options to end it under the law. It will then move on to discuss measures and moves, political or otherwise, related to this, and examine their implications for the nation.

It will consider the measures necessary for the continuation of democracy and the rule of law in Malaysia without impediment.

Earlier webinars in the Because It Matters series are:

- Beyond Vision 2020: Growth with Equity in the New Decade;

- Battling Corruption and Patronage; and,

- Educating Malaysia: Teaching in a Changing World
