GEORGE TOWN – Penang police have seized drugs worth RM3.5 million and nabbed six individuals in two separate raids recently.
Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said one raid on a house in Prai last Monday saw 29kg of syabu seized and two men and a woman held.
This was followed by another raid on a premise in Seberang Prai Selatan, where another man was arrested.
“All four individuals are between 25 and 42 years old, with all having previous criminal records and testing positive for drugs, except for the female suspect.
“Police seized 29kg of syabu, 4.3kg of base heroin, 8.6kg of heroin, 52.1kg of caffeine, as well as a Czech Republic-made pistol with 13 bullets,” he told a press conference today.
All the drugs seized are worth RM1.4 million and can be supplied to 404,500 drug addicts.
The syndicate is believed to have been operating since the beginning of the year.
Apart from drugs, police also confiscated nine vehicles, jewellery worth RM55,304, RM790,000 in cash, and funds in bank accounts amounting to RM45,523.23, all of which totals RM1.26 million.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a collision between two fishing boats in Sg Kuala Muda led to the discovery of 60kg of syabu in one of the boats.
In the July 6 incident, Shuhaily said the police, along with the fire brigade and Civil Defence Force, carried out a search-and-rescue operation after a fisherman was believed to have fallen into the sea as a result of the accident.
“However, police found 60kg of drugs worth RM2.1 million and arrested two fishermen aged 38 and 42.
“The syndicate is believed to have been carrying out drug distribution activities for foreign markets, and all the drugs seized can be supplied to about 300,000 drug addicts.”
Shuhaily said after three days, the search-and-rescue operation was called off after police suspected the fisherman had fled to avoid arrest.
“Police are seeking Muhammad Azim Zahari, 19, who is believed to have escaped, to assist in the investigation.” – The Vibes, July 14, 2021
