MIRI – Sarawak has detected 152 Covid-19 variant cases as of yesterday, 93 of which were of the Delta strain, pushing a lawmaker to call for border closure.

Miri MP Teo Yu Keng today called on the Sarawak government to press the panic button immediately after the Health Ministry released the figures.

Teo, who is Sarawak PKR vice-president, noted that the state tops the list of cases with Delta and the other strains.

“Close our borders now, and get ready for more local transmission of such cases,” he warned.

He added that the latest figures show Sarawak ahead of Selangor in terms of number of cases with variants of concern.

“We are most fearful of Delta (variant), and shockingly, Sarawak has the most number of Delta cases, much higher than even Selangor.

“The only defence Sarawak has now is the vaccines, but even then, Delta cases in Europe and Israel have surged.”

He said there were only 17 Delta cases in the state just three weeks ago.

As of yesterday, Sarawak has 93 Delta cases, one of which is a non-citizen.

Sarawak also has 44 local Beta cases and one foreign case, 13 local Theta patients, and one foreign Eta carrier.

Selangor in second place has 74 variants of concern cases, of which 17 are Delta infections. – The Vibes, July 23, 2021
