KUALA LUMPUR Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has insisted that the government still has the support of more than 110 MPs today amid the chaos in Dewan Rakyat.

In a brief statement, the Umno vice-president acknowledged the decree issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong today while admitting that the political instability will affect the recovery efforts of the economy and the pandemic.

“So, I hope the people can remain calm in the face of the current situation. Together we pray that this political crisis will end immediately.”

‘Ismail Sabri should test support in Parliament’

In response, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim challenged Bera MP Ismail Sabri to prove majority support for the Perikatan Nasional government in Dewan Rakyat.

“Ismail Sabri knows the law. He should test the Dewan (Rakyat). He is afraid to test the Dewan (Rakyat).

“He is a minister, he is Pahang born. Does he not understand the meaning of ‘derhaka’? Does he not understand the king’s decree? Does he not understand the functions of Parliament?

“I would like to advise those who are stubborn to please read the law and respect the constitution and the king’s decree,” he said in a press conference in Parliament after the sitting was adjourned to Monday.

Umno calls for PM resignation

Earlier today, Umno expressed its disappointment with the Muhyiddin administration for disobeying the call by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to bring up and debate the emergency ordinances in line with Article 150 (3) of the federal constitution.

In a statement today, party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was more disappointing that the king had to reveal that the cancellation of the emergency ordinances, as announced by the law minister on Monday, had confused the Dewan Rakyat and was done without His Majesty’s approval.

“Such actions are clearly a form of betrayal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and also a betrayal of the principles contained in the federal constitution

“In relation to this, Umno will request Muhyiddin and Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to resign from their posts honourably.

“Umno MPs must express and execute the decision by the party’s Supreme Council on July 7 to revoke their support for Muhyiddin as prime minister,” he said.

The Bagan Datuk MP said the decision is in line with their oath as federal lawmakers in the lower house to be loyal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and to protect, preserve and defend the federal constitution at all times.

“The stand is also in line with the basis and objectives of Umno’s formation to always preserve the royal institution as contained in the party’s constitution.” – The Vibes, July 29, 2021
