KUALA LUMPUR – At least seven Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs have been offered inducements and positions in exchange for their support of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.  

In a statement, the PH presidential council said the MPs are Cha Kee Chin (Rasah), Khoo Poay Tiong (Kota Melaka), M. Kula Segaran (Ipoh Barat), Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (Kulim Bandar Baharu), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Azman Ismail (Kuala Kedah), and Chan Ming Kai (Alor Star).

“We are outraged, and we condemn the dirty tricks by certain parties who offered inducements and positions to at least seven MPs in exchange for their support. 

“The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) needs to take serious action, given that similar incidents have happened before to opposition MPs. 

“If the MACC fails to do so, this only proves the allegations that government agencies are being used as political weapons by certain parties and not to uphold the rule of law,” the council said. 

The joint statement was issued by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. 

The council also stressed that those who attempted to bribe opposition MPs have committed a crime, while those who withdrew their support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin prove that he has no legitimacy nor the majority to remain in power. 

“As we know, Muhyiddin has lost his majority (in the Dewan Rakyat) and still refuses to resign based on Article 43(4) of the federal constitution.  

“We insist that Muhyiddin must resign immediately or allow a special Parliament sitting to resume now to discuss and decide the motion of confidence in the near future. 

“Do not use this time until September to ‘buy’ support with all sorts of undignified and illegal tactics,” it said. 

Yesterday, Kula Segaran said in a statement that one of his officers received a “random call followed by WhatsApp messages” from an unidentified party offering him money, a ministerial position, and other incentives in exchange for him to support the PN-led government.

His secretary, Jeremy Chamash, has since lodged a police report on the matter. 

Meanwhile, Khoo Poay Tiong and Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii also made similar allegations.  

Yii took to Twitter to share a screenshot of WhatsApp messages from an unknown number highlighting two ministerial positions left vacant following Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Datuk Noraini Ahmad’s departure from their positions as energy and natural resources minister and higher education minister respectively. – The Vibes, August 8, 2021
