KOTA KINABALU – An eatery in Penampang is giving out free food to the underprivileged despite businesses here struggling to cope with the economic fallout from Covid-19.

Ching Fah Restaurant owner Hee Kwong Hong sees it as a way of giving back to his community.

He started doing this on Sunday, when all the food was snapped up in 30 minutes. The next day, everything was gone in half that time.

“On the first day, we had only one counter. That’s why it took longer to give away the food.

“So, on Monday, I opened up two counters to expedite the process, and to not keep the crowd waiting too long.”

The 64-year-old plans to continue giving out meals until next month.

His restaurant, a local favourite, has suffered an 80% decline in business since the pandemic began.

Hee said only 100 food packets will be given out daily, and that his efforts are supported by a nearby Chinese temple, where he serves as vice-chairman.

“There are individuals who offer rice, vegetables and other produce.

“We do not serve pork,” he added, assuring the Muslim community.

“Part of the cooking is done in another kitchen, where most of my Muslim staff deal with the preparation.”

Before the virus crisis, Ching Fah Restaurant’s catering service was highly sought after for weddings and gatherings.

Established in 1964, the eatery was opened in Penampang’s main township of Donggongon by Hee’s late father, who was the district’s former Chinese kapitan and known as “Kapitan Ah Lok”. – The Vibes, November 5, 2020
