KUALA LUMPUR – Heavy monsoon rains are expected to hit western Sarawak and eastern Sabah beginning next Monday, said the National Disaster Management Agency.

Director-General Datuk Aminuddin Hassim, during a press conference in Taman Sri Muda today, said this is based on a warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

“There are early indications that heavy monsoon rains are expected to start on December 27, and this has potential to bring continuous downpours to western Sarawak and eastern Sabah.”

Meanwhile, Aminuddin said MetMalaysia has issued a warning of thunderstorms, and heavy rains are forecast for several districts in Pahang, Selangor, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.

“At 1pm today, MetMalaysia announced that heavy rainfall is forecast for Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin in Pahang; Klang and Kuala Langat in Selangor; and Kota Tinggi in Johor.

“MetMalaysia also warned that morning thunderstorms are expected in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, eastern Sabah, and western Sarawak.

“From the evening up till late at night, there are chances of storms occurring in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

With the information that has been made public, he hopes that other agencies involved in flood mitigation efforts will arrange their teams accordingly in order to be on standby for any other potential disasters.
