KUALA LUMPUR – A robbery suspect’s attempt to flee from police after being swab-tested at the Beranang health clinic came to a grinding halt when he was apprehended just 50m away from the clinic.

Kajang district police chief Mohd Zaid Hassan said the suspect, who was clad in his purple lockup uniform, has since been brought back to the district headquarters following his re-arrest.

“The suspect was brought back to the Kajang headquarters and later placed at the Kajang police station lockup safely.

“Investigations revealed the suspect was arrested in relation to a robbery case and was supposed to be under remand until January 13,” Zaid said.

The district chief said additional investigations under Section 223 and Section 224 of the Penal Code have since been opened against the suspect.

Section 223 relates to suspects escaping from confinement while under the supervision of authorities, while Section 224 concerns resistance or obstruction by an individual to his lawful apprehension.

Zaid said the incident took place after the suspect, along with 18 other detainees, were escorted by police to the Beranang health clinic to be swab-tested for Covid-19 yesterday morning.

He said then at around 11am, the suspect bolted from the group while the other detainees were being escorted back onto the back of the police lorry.

“After they were done with the swab tests, all the detainees were escorted into the police truck. While the others were getting onto the lorry, one of the detainees suddenly tried to flee the scene.

“However, the detainee was later recaptured about 50m away from the scene,” Zaid said in a statement today.

A video of the alleged incident that has since been uploaded on to social media platforms was also verified by Zaid. – The Vibes, January 12, 2022
