KOTA KINABALU – State ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak will not seek a higher allocation under Budget 2021, given that the country is still battling Covid-19.

Secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the RM4.4 billion set aside for the state is “reasonable”.

“I believe that what Sarawak has been allocated is reasonable, considering that a big sum of money is needed to ensure the safety, health and well-being of the rakyat during this pandemic.

“I am sure Sarawak can expect a higher allocation in the future, when the country’s economy recovers.”

He said the Budget shows the good relationship between the federal and state governments, with Sarawak being the second-biggest recipient after Sabah.

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general said the Budget’s focus on boosting telecommunications infrastructure and broadband is in line with the digital economic policy inspired by Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg.

Nanta added that allocations for road and telecoms infrastructure, mobile banks and well-water supply for schools prove that Putrajaya prioritises Sarawak’s development.

Abang Johari, too, expressed satisfaction with the allocation for infrastructure development.

Speaking after the Sarawak Press Awards yesterday, he welcomed the reinstatement of funding for native customary rights.

Sarawak Utilities Minister and PBB vice-president Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom said he hopes the Budget will help the nation recover from the blow dealt by the coronavirus.

“While the government continues to fulfil needs related to basic amenities and infrastructure, sustainable income must be emphasised. Employment and job creation should be our utmost focus.” – The Vibes, November 7, 2020
