KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been discharged from the National Heart Institute (IJN) after his initial admission there almost a month ago.

The 96-year-old has received rehabilitative and medical treatment during his stay there and will now continue recuperating at home.

“Tun Dr Mahathir shall be having his follow-up for continuation of his medical treatment as and when required in the near future,” IJN said in a statement today.

IJN said the head of the political party was officially discharged at 8.40am today, adding that both Dr Mahathir and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali conveyed their gratitude to all well-wishers.

Yesterday, IJN announced that Dr Mahathir was undergoing rehabilitative treatment at the facility, while making scheduled visits to his home from the hospital for physiotherapy and additional medical procedures.

According to Dr Mahathir’s daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, her father’s latest admission into IJN on January 20 was part of a follow-up treatment to an elective procedure he underwent on January 8.

On January 22, she had said Dr Mahathir was in stable condition following the admission and that he was responding well to the treatment administered.

The following day, Marina asked the public not to heed rumours about her father’s well-being, saying that she and her family will be the ones providing official updates on his condition.

On January 26, Marina said that her father had been transferred out of the Cardiac Care Unit to an ordinary ward at IJN after his condition continued to improve. – The Vibes, February 5, 2022
