KUALA LUMPUR – The situation is under control in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, despite the breaking of an embankment near a floodgate along the Klang River in the vicinity of the neighbourhood.

It is understood that, as a result, water has broken the banks of the river.

According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, an emergency call was received at 8.15pm with officers arriving at the scene by 8.30pm.

However, the department’s chief Norazam Khamis says “the situation is under control”.

“The Fire Department has mobilised five boats to the area,” he told reporters today, adding that the rain has stopped and numerous officers are on standby at the location.

As of 10.30pm, it is understood that the Drainage and Irrigation Department is working on repairing the damaged embankment.

In December, Taman Sri Muda was ground-zero in what some have called the “Great Klang Valley Floods”.

Three days of non-stop rain saw the Klang River overflow into neighbouring Taman Sri Muda, resulting in 21 deaths and over 15,000 victims displaced.

At the time, authorities were panned for what has been perceived as a delayed response to the disaster, with both federal and state authorities accused of being slow in their rescue efforts.

This, in turn, resulted in heartwarming scenes of Malaysians from all walks of life going on the ground to assist victims. – The Vibes, March 2, 2022
