KOTA KINABALU – Two people are reported missing after flash floods here last night that inundated villages, as the state capital bore the brunt of tropical storm Vamco.

State Civil Defence Force acting chief Mohd Izaimi Md Daud told The Vibes that a search-and-rescue operation is ongoing for the two missing people.

They have been identified as a boy aged 6 and his sister aged 4.

It is believed that they were swept by floodwaters into an overflowing river.

Fire and Rescue Department said the children were in a four-wheel drive vehicle with their father, crossing a bridge in Kg Dangulad.

The father was separated from his children around midnight. The vehicle has been found.

Hundreds were affected in Kg Pampang, Kg Contoh, Kg Dangulad, Kg Keningau, and Taman Kota – areas in the interior of Keningau.

Local news reports confirmed at least several houses were destroyed by a landslide at KM18 of the Jalan Kimanis-Keningau following the downpour at dawn.

Meanwhile, a weather alert had been issued to the maritime community near Kudat.

Labuan maritime director First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said waves up to 3.5m high are expected in the South China Sea, posing a threat to all shipping activities, including fishing and ferry services.

Rosli advised all maritime communities to take precaution due to the weather alert. – The Vibes, November 10, 2020
