KUALA LUMPUR – Less than a week after a man died in custody in Kuantan, the police reported another custodial death – 15th this year – in the Beranang satellite prison, Selangor.
In a brief statement, the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department said a 45-year-old Malay man died yesterday and was suspected to have suffered from a seizure.
Department director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the prison personnel informed the hospital at 10.32am yesterday and health officers arrived at 10.45am to examine the man, subsequently sending him to the hospital.
He added that the man died on the way to hospital as verified by the assistant medical officer.
Cause of death is unknown.
The victim was in police custody under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. He pleaded not guilty.
“He was temporarily placed in the Kajang police lock-up before being sent to the Beranang facility under prison remand.”
The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations and Custodial Deaths Unit under his department.
This appears to be the 15th custodial death reported by Bukit Aman this year.
Just four days ago, an inmate detained at the Indera Mahkota centralised lock-up in Kuantan died in custody on the afternoon of April 9 while awaiting his next court date for drug-related offences.
Azri had said the 42-year-old man was seen alive at 4.40pm the same day when he was given medication to treat his tuberculosis. – The Vibes, April 14, 2022
