KOTA KINABALU – Samples of vegetables available in Kundasang have been taken for testing due to concerns over high levels of pesticides in domestic supplies.
Sabah Health Department’s director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said the Food Safety and Quality Unit recently collected 43 samples from 16 suppliers and 19 retailers in Kundasang, the state’s main district that supplies vegetables.
Samples of vegetables that typically contain high levels of pesticide residue were collected, including chilli, capsicum, tomato, lettuce, and leaf celery.
The operation was a reminder to agricultural stakeholders to not use prohibited pesticides or use a volume exceeding the maximum residue allowed by law.
“The department will release the results once the tests are completed,” Rose told The Vibes today.
The Ops Caras Hijau was conducted under the Enforcement and Compliance Law under Food Act 1983, and Food Regulations 1985, with 30 personnel from the Tuaran and Ranau health offices.
She said this will be conducted periodically to ensure the safety and health of consumers, and the public is also reminded to wash the vegetables before consumption. – The Vibes, July 17, 2022
