SANDAKAN – Warisan vice president Datuk Junz Wong has brushed off claims that the party is deviating from its core principle of being a multiracial party after the party established a Chinese committee, which he chairs.
Being a multiracial party will remain a core value for Warisan, and the committee was set up to better serve the Chinese community, especially in Chinese-majority seats.
“We are still a multiracial party. Our party structure is that… any matter such as recruiting new members, Chinese or not, will still have to go back to the division; a new Chinese member must apply through the party’s division.
“Our committee is focused on serving the people in Chinese areas,” he said at a press conference in Bandar Letat here, yesterday.
Wong said that the party had to limit its engagement activities with the community when the party was allied to Pakatan Harapan (PH), as Warisan had to avoid friction with a Chinese component “friend”.
“We had a sensitive partner (at the time). Now we can take care of these areas with mainly Chinese voters; we can serve the best,” he said in a clear statement that he was referring to DAP.
Meanwhile, Wong announced the party’s Chinese committee coordinators, namely:
Karamunting rep George Hiew Vun Zin for Batu Sapi, also deputy chairman of the committee; Elopura rep Calvin for Sandakan; Fong Vun Fui for Karamunting; Liew Kian Vun for Sekong; and Alex Wong Tshun Kee for Elopura.
He said among the other roles played by the coordinators include recruiting more members, and so far the party has seen a positive response among the community.
“We expect more from the Chinese community to join Warisan,” he added.
Warisan officially announced its Sabah Chinese state committee on June 22 in Kota Kinabalu.
The move indicates that the party has no intention of working with DAP or PH in the coming general election. –The Vibes, July 30, 2022
