KUALA LUMPUR – A 30-year-old man was detained in Puchong at 11.15pm yesterday under the Sedition Act to facilitate investigations into threats made on social media against Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
Police also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card believed to be used to upload the offending material by a Facebook user known as “Apiez Bond”.
In a statement, the authorities said the man is being remanded for four days until August 23.
The case is being investigated by the Classified Criminal Investigations Department (USJT) under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Yesterday, scores of netizens called for police to investigate a Twitter user who purportedly threatened Tengku Maimun and her husband Datuk Zamani Ibrahim, with many tagging the Royal Malaysian Police’s account.
Currently, the Federal Court is hearing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s final appeal against his conviction over the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
Tengku Maimun chairs the five-person bench, which comprises Sabah and Sarawak Chief Judge Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court judges Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan, Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan, and Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah. – The Vibes, August 20, 2022
