BUKIT MERTAJAM – The police are investigating if the missing RM4 million shipment of computer chip components was an inside job after its probe hit a dead end.
Bukit Mertajam district police chief Tan Cheng San told the media that authorities had detained seven people including two security guards from the premise after the shipment went missing from a Bukit Tengah warehouse last month.
However, the police have yet to find the perpetrators and recover the missing components – with speculation that they might have smuggled out of the country together with the items.
“We have yet to recover the chip components. They could have possibly been taken out of the country.
“Since the components are designed for certain equipment, they are harder to dispose of.”
He added that the guards were detained as their sworn statements had some contradictions but the police have since released all seven as there was no substantial evidence to extend their remand term.
Last month, it was found that the shipment was stolen in the late hours on July 5.
The case is being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which states that whoever commits gang robbery shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 20 years, and shall also be liable to whipping. – The Vibes, August 27, 2022
