KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has refuted claims of an alleged cover-up regarding the purported involvement of several Kuwaiti individuals in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

In a statement, the graft buster said it has opened an investigation into the matter and was waiting for information from Kuwaiti enforcement agencies through cooperation via mutual legal assistance (MLA).

Responding to a recent report by an online portal alleging inaction by the Malaysian government, the MACC said the probe had begun two years ago and was still underway.

“MACC, as one of the main leaders in asset recovery efforts, focuses on recovering assets/money lost due to embezzlement from 1MDB and several other companies involved.

“Every action carried out in cooperation with foreign enforcement agencies involves a very complex and complicated flow of money,” the MACC explained.

However, the MACC did not indicate which article it was refuting although it is believed to be referring to a piece by Sarawak Report published in late August.

The MACC also reiterated that the government had rejected several settlement offers made by 1MDB-linked fugitive businessman Jho Low, in line with the attorney-general’s statement made on July 16 this year.

“All parties are requested not to make any speculation regarding this issue to avoid confusion among the public and affecting investigations.” – The Vibes, September 4, 2022
