GEORGE TOWN – People can now vote to determine the best hawker food in Penang in the state’s street food competition, which runs from today until November 30.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the competition, part of the “Love Penang” campaign, targets some 2,000 street food vendors and hawkers in the state, which prides itself on being the country’s gastronomic capital.

“The competition will determine which of them can have bragging rights to have the best nasi kandar or char koay teow,” he told a press conference here today.

To date, only 200 hawkers and vendors have signed up to participate in the competition which is divided into several categories, including desserts and snacks.

The winning hawker or vendor stands to take home RM200,000 in prize money.

Hawkers and vendors can register online to compete at lovepg.my or via the LovePENANG app. They will be given a QR code to be pasted on their stalls, trucks, or push carts.

People can then vote once for each hawker or vendor by scanning the same QR code, preferably after having tasted the food.

Chow said the competition’s objective is to promote street food as a unifying force for the local community, as the majority of voters are expected to be Penangites. – The Vibes, September 20, 2022.
