KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has appointed seven individuals, including sports retailer Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd founder and chairman Ali Hassan Mohd Hassan, as members of its independent oversight body.

MACC said the Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel members were appointed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob for a two-year period starting July 1, 2022 until June 30, 2024.

Two of them are reappointments, four are new faces, while another member – MRCB’s executive vice-chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din – had been appointed earlier on April 1, 2022, the anti-graft body said in a statement.

The reappointments are of former Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Borhan Dolah as chairman, and University Malaya Centre for Civilisational dialogue director Datuk Azizan Baharuddin as a panel member, MACC said.

Aside from Ali Hassan, the other new members of the panel included former Universiti Sains Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Asma Ismail, Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance governor Datin Yasmin Ahmad Merican, and International Islamic University of Malaysia legal advisor Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod.

“All appointed individuals are professionals and experts from various fields who are believed to be able to assist MACC in achieving its aim of creating a society that detests corruption in various sectors,” MACC said.

“Among the roles of the panel members is to advise MACC on improving the effectiveness of assessments and consultation on practices, systems and work procedures in the public as well as private sectors – preventing opportunities for corrupt practices.”

The MACC said additionally, the panel will update its Anti-Corruption Advisory Board on the graft buster’s implementation of the MACC Act 2009.

The appointment certificates were presented by board chairman, Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang and MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, today.

In December last year, renowned economist Edmund Terence Gomez stepped down as a member of the panel, citing a failure to discuss accusations of conflict of interest against some of its leaders. – The Vibes, September 22, 2022
